Reading & vocabulary level are age appropriate, use of abstract terms are minimal, print size is appropriate, information is relevant to the topic being investigated, and to the lives of students.

This is our Review Rubric.

 

How is it that we get our beautiful grades for our reviews? Read below to find out what exactly goes into each category.

 

Each group is rated on a scale out of ten, ten being the best. A final score out of sixty is given and a grade assigned as per a normal class distribution. (A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D, and F [failing]). Refer to this for more information.

Effectiveness of Presentation

Text is not too lengthy or convoluted, pictures have visual appeal and match the text, pictures of substance cover a range of circumstances and can be used to teach picture reading skills (ex. illustrations/pictures showing children talking with adults or other children or children creating charts, lists, posters,etc and demonstrating important social studies skills.

Level of Engagement

Children identify with information, information is presented in personalized way (ex. a story with authentic & vivid characters engaged in storylines applicable to a child’s life), tells stories/shares experiences through a child’s eyes, adds relevance, and inquiry questions are used.

Promotes higher level thinking as per Bloom's taxonomy.

Attention to Social Studies Concepts

Enhances teaching of social studies concepts and terminology, demonstrates democratic citizenship/ engages kids in thinking about democratic citizenship in their own lives, shows children engaged in real life citizenship activities inside/outside of classroom, shows people’s conflicting views on issues and decision making to demonstrate that at times there are disagreements that can cause anger/frustration but there are ways to resolve conflict. 

Range of Perspectives
Respect for People and Places

Children’s views are challenged in order to shift their thinking about the information being presented, demonstration of diversity in Canadian society, exposes children to previously neglected groups through inclusive storylines, illustrations and photos.

No stereotyping, racism, ageism, sexism, men and women are represented in diverse roles across time, cultures & context.
